Visiting Ibague, Colombia

Studying rice farming systems in Colombia is fun and I can find many new things there, simply because of differences in landscape compared to Japan.

iEMS2016 in Toulouse

I presented a work on spatial distribution modelling in iEMS2016 held in Toulouse, France.  It was great to meet with Professors and friends from University of Hohenheim where I stayed for about 5 months in 2008-2009.

3rd Shichirin party!!!

After a series of our regular surveys, we had the 3rd Shichirin party (fish only) in front of our laboratory open channel.  Some students and professors joined and made our party big and fun!

Next Shichirin party may be in late August with some international guests!

Regular survey in June 2016

We made another survey and found different fish species in our previous survey.  In irrigation season, many fishes are migrating from Tama river, while some fish species remain in this irrigation system.

Regular survey in June

We made a regular survey on fish fauna.  With a great help from UG3 students, the survey was efficient and swift and we could finish in a day.  It was great to see many fish being ready for spawning (no photo available…).

After another regular survey next week, we’ll have our 3rd Shichirin party on July 1, 2016!

One of my main international conference, 12th International Conference on Ecohydraulics will be held in Tokyo (August 19-24, 2018).  This symposium is a joint symposium convened by the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR) and International Society for River Science (ISRS).  As a local organizing committee member, we are making our best effort to make this conference attractive and fruitful.

Irrigation has started!!!

Irrigation in 2016 has started in our target irrigation system.  Many fish species start migrating into the system.   With the increased amount of water, rice transplanting can be seen in the area.  It’s always nice to meet many fish species except alien invasive ones (we’ve already seen some invasive one, though).

New office!!!

New office is ready for my students and guest scientists.  I strongly expect my students to actively involve scientific research in my laboratory!!!

PS: Please keep this office beautiful.

Journal of Ecohydraulics

A new journal, the Journal of Ecohydraulics, has been officially launched by the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR) with the support of China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research (IWHR) (see the Aims and Scope). After the ceremony, fourteen invited speakers presented their views on ecohydraulics with some of their research achievement.

It was great to attend this conference and other related meetings.  We need to work hard to make ISE2018 successful!!!

Regular survey in May 2016

We could catch many fish including a fish species we caught for the first time in this site.  It is indeed necessary to continue environmental and ecosystem monitoring for understanding  the current situation and developing improved management strategies to keep human activities in harmony with nature.  For this purpose, we’ll be working on ecohydraulic research integrating ecology, hydraulics and informatics.

Great to find agricultural activity here!!!
